Capetonian David Perel came, saw and conquered on the weekend as he scored two race wins and two fastest laps in two Spa Francorchamps Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo races in his Peresoft Obox Lamborghini Bergamo Gallardo as the at the weekend.
Perel, who was only called up to race and flew to Belgium on Tuesday, had never seen the classic Spa circuit before, but that made little difference to the man who has already made a significant mark in the Italian GT Championship so far this year.
“What an incredible weekend,” Perel admitted. “Thanks so much to team Lamborghini Bonaldi for the opportunity to race at such a legendary track – I’m so incredibly grateful, but to win win at Spa, I’ll take that with both hands thank you.
Despite only driving the circuit on Thursday, Perel was upset by missing pole position by just a tenth of a second, but David, who drove the first stint, started the first race first and took the lead in the first corner and set the fastest lap of the race as he pulled 10 second lead before the safety car came out when Perel pitted to hand the Gallardo over to co-driver Ricardo Vera.
The pit stop dropped to duo to second but Vera made a last minute on the final lap lap move to regain the lead and pull off a dramatic win. “Fastest lap and the win,” David reported. “I’m delighted!”
A drenched second race proved even more dramatic, as Perel explains. “It was super wet – I couldn’t see a thing! “My co-driver Vera started the race and, lost some places, so after the driver change I pushed like crazy from last place. “I managed to catch the leader with a lap to go and then a back marker handed me a great good opportunity to make it two wins out of two!” a delighted Perel concluded.
David returns to Cape Town before jetting to the next race in the Italian GT Cup at Vallelunga in two weeks. Unless of course something else pops up in between…
